2018 has been a magical disaster of a year. Hands-down the best year of my life. I want to remember this year forever - how it looks and feels and tastes and sounds. Since music has defined much of my life, I decided to celebrate the end of a magical year by making a playlist. But it was an overwhelming task. So, I did the reasonable thing and called on the Women Who Get Shit Done to help. I asked my friends to pick a song that embodies their 2018. I invited them to write about it if they wanted (or not). To share their name, or stay anonymous.
Of course, these Women Got Shit Done.
The WWGSD made a playlist - 34 songs from almost 30 women. I’ve been listening to it for a week now. It is everything that 2018 has been. It is hopeful, defiant, inspiring, heartbreaking, angry and full of love. It is powerful. It is clever. It is sexy. It is amazing. I cry every time I listen to it.
You see, while I spent the 2018 lounging by the pool, going to concerts, and working on my deadlift, my friends were out living, fighting, working, and changing the world. Which, honestly, is why I knew I could check out of life with such gusto this year. The WWGSD showed up for me, and they held down the fort for me! These women know how to live life. And the results are magnificent. For 2018, here are the shared life experiences of this group of women:
Got married * Got divorced * Took the promotion * Walked out of a job * Had a baby * Lost a child * Got a tan * Dealt with a major illness * Buried a parent * Reunited with missing family * Graduated * Found faith * Lost a fortune * Survived a mass shooting * Ran for office * Got a tan * Wrote a book * Got cheated on * Bought a house * Got sober * Got fired * Came out * Fell in love * Got a tattoo *
(I can’t emphasize the tan part enough. I’d like some general acknowledgement of my accomplishment.)
These are my friends, you all. These are my people. We lived this together, even though we lived it apart. Every time I listen to this playlist, I think of the WWGSD. I cheer for them. I pray for them. I celebrate them. So should you.
Over the next few days, I’m going to post some of their stories, some lyrics, and some songs. I hope you’ll follow along. I hope you’ll cheer for them, too. And if you are inspired to celebrate 2018 with a song, it’s not too late to join the party! Send me a note.
